Public Hearings Set on City's Proposed 2024-25 Budget and Tax Rate

Garland's proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2024-25 was presented to the City Council on Monday, Aug. 5. In the coming weeks before the budget and tax rate are approved, Council will offer opportunities for input from the public.

Discussion of the $1 billion proposed budget include a special budget Work Session at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, and public hearings at regular Council meetings at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3. The City Council is scheduled to adopt the 2024-25 budget on Sept. 3.

As proposed, the tax rate will remain unchanged for 2024-25 at 68.9746 cents per $100 in property valuation.

In turning over the proposed budget at the Aug. 5 meeting, City Manager Judson Rex discussed his budget priorities. Those include to ensure facilities from past bond programs are adequately staffed, to be able to adequately respond to the results of the City's recent street and alley condition assessment, and to maintain high levels of reserves to respond to anticipated and unforeseen financial challenges.

New facilities scheduled for completion in 2024-25 include the West Garland Library and Holford Recreation & Aquatics Center.
