Collaboration with PHCCI to drive business diversity and capability

22 July 2024

A new social investment contract between BHP and Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHCCI) aims to drive economic growth, sustainability, and community development in the region.

BHP will invest $2 million over the next three years to boost local business activity with a focus on driving diversity of suppliers, attracting sustainable businesses to the region, and an increase in job creation and workforce readiness.

The partnership was announced by Cindy Dunham, General Manager Port, on Saturday night at the 2024 Business Excellence Awards in Port Hedland.

The program aims to attract, develop and retain a diversified small business ecosystem in Port Hedland, South Hedland and Wedgefield through the delivery of workshops and programming designed to build the capability of local business and encourage new and diverse businesses to enter the market.

The three-year road map will also see further investment into four PHCCI business hubs, and support for the delivery of two key business events - the Annual Business Excellence Awards and Biennial Hedland Economic Forum.

PHCCI hopes the program will create a resilient and diverse business environment, and position Port Hedland as one of WA's premier economic drivers. It will also improve liveability by bringing new businesses and services to the region.

"As a long-standing partner with the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we are delighted to help create an environment where local businesses can thrive, says Cindy Dunham, General Manager Port.

"Our operations are an integral part of the community, and we are proud to support local economic outcomes that contribute to the long-term sustainability of Port Hedland."

PHCCI expects this new program to benefit a large number of stakeholders, from entrepreneurs and small business, to job seekers, residents, and industry.

BHP has partnered with PHCCI for more than 10 years to support economic development in the region, enabling the establishment of four distinct co-working facilities tailored to diverse business needs.

Additionally, our support has enabled events such as the Annual Business Excellence Awards and Biennial Hedland Economic Forum to raise the profile of local businesses and the region more broadly.

This renewed partnership will build on these achievements.

"This strategic alliance is a key milestone in PHCCI's ongoing efforts to create a resilient and diverse business environment. It positions Port Hedland as a premier economic driver, not just within the Northwest region and state economy, but as a significant contributor to the National Economy," said PHCCI CEO, Rebekah Worthington.

"It's a testament to our commitment to fostering a thriving, empowered community. Together, we will create opportunities that ensure our local businesses continue to excel and drive economic growth."

Local community and business can access the PHCCI support services through one of four hubs:

  • The Tradie Hub facilitates collaboration among trade-based businesses, offering workspace, training, and networking events.
  • The Web Business Hub offers coworking spaces and innovative programs supporting small businesses in management, finance, training, and technology.
  • The Bungalow on Edgar provides subsidised retail space for micro and small businesses, fostering inclusivity and growth.
  • The South Hedland Hub promotes small business growth through co-working spaces, upskilling opportunities, and entrepreneurship support.
