Ahead of Emmy Awards, Congressman Castro Congratulates First Latino Chair of the Television Academy

SAN ANTONIO - Ahead of tonight's Emmy Awards, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement to recognize the achievements of Cris Abrego, the first Latino chair of the Television Academy:

"Tonight, Cris Abrego will make history as the first Latino Television Academy chair to preside over television's biggest night. For decades, Cris has been a trailblazer and successful entrepreneur - helping to shape modern entertainment and elevate underrepresented voices in Hollywood. As Latinos push for greater representation in American media and entertainment, tonight's Emmy Awards marks an important step forward. Congratulations to Cris and all those who will follow in his footsteps."

Congressman Castro is a longtime advocate for greater Latino representation in media. In 2020, he commissioned a series of groundbreaking reports from the non-partisan Government Accountability Office that put a spotlight on the continued underrepresentation of Latinos in American media and entertainment. He has been an outspoken voice for Latino inclusion in American film and television, publishing, and video games and championed the creation of the National Museum of the American Latino in Washington, D.C. and the Mexican American Civil Rights Museum in San Antonio, Texas.
