On Saturday, June 29th at 10 a.m., the Chicago Park District broke ground on a new fieldhouse in Jackie Robinson Park, 10540 S. Morgan. The new 18,000-foot facility will replace the existing facility and support opportunities to better meet the needs of the Washington Heights community and replace the smaller existing fieldhouse.

"We are beyond excited to break ground on the new fieldhouse at Jackie Robinson Park," said Park District General Superintendent and CEO Rosa EscareƱo. "Investing in our parks and supporting communities has always been the mission of the Chicago Park District, "This new fieldhouse will provide children and families of the Washington Heights with new and expanded recreational opportunities that support health and overall well-being.

"The 21st Ward is ecstatic for the new fieldhouse dedicated to baseball legend Jackie Robinson and the families of our community," said Alderman Ronnie Mosley. "This facility will offer jobs, a range of diverse programming, and holistic activities that will inspire our youth and families to find their own greatness, just like the park's namesake."

The new 18,000 square foot fieldhouse will include a full-sized gymnasium with a basketball court and drop-down batting cages, two multipurpose clubrooms, a fitness center, dedicated teen room, pantry and restrooms. Jackie Robinson Park was opened to the public in 1954. Since then, it has expanded to 12.7 acres, including a former Chicago Public School building which has been dormant since 2010 and will serve as the space for the new fieldhouse. The park is also home to the Jackie Robinson West Little League program which has served a community of over 25,000.

Funding for the $14,400,814.00 project includes is funded through the State of Illinois, Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) grant.

The project underscores the Chicago Park District's commitment to meeting the recreational needs and interests of all Chicago's communities. Youth, teens, adults, and senior will all be able to enjoy the new fieldhouse that is slated to be completed in Fall 2025.
