Modernizing Drug Development with Virtual Control Groups

Virtual control groups (VCG) are the perfect example of how technology, harmonized scientific data, and innovation can drive new alternative methods to explore animal reduction on nonclinical studies."

Unlock the Potential of Virtual Control Groups

Charles River and Sanofi will collaborate to pilot VCGs in nonclinical toxicology programs with the goal of reducing animal usage by replacing selected control group animals with selected matched virtual control animals developed using retrospective datasets.

In a typical animal study, approximately 25% of the animals are used as controls. VCGs have the capability to reduce the number of animals needed for these studies by reusing the measurement data gathered from these control groups. The joint vision of this initiative is to combine the science of toxicology with the power of machine learning to drive greater use of VCGs for nonclinical research across the industry.

This VCG collaboration is guided by our Alternative Methods Advancement Project (AMAP), a program focused on reducing the number of animals in research.
