WASHINGTON - Last week, the NAACP attended the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Illinois, where President and CEO Derrick Johnson kicked off night one of the four-day convening with remarks to uplift and energize Black America. Throughout the week, NAACP led canvassing efforts within the community, participated in important discussions, and hosted a panel discussion comprised of intergenerational leaders to discuss #Our2025 and the path forward to combat Project 2025.

NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, shared the following reflection:

"We are facing the most important election of our lifetime. Our rights and our future are fully at stake this election season and therefore we must mobilize Black voters by the millions ahead of November. There is no time more pertinent than now for the NAACP to meet Black voters where they are and galvanize our community. Our time in Chicago proved to be highly engaging and impactful and we are proud to continue our advocacy for policy that will enrich the lives of Black Americans. The Association is proud to return to the city of Chicago for the 117th NAACP National Convention in 2026. Let us be reminded that the people of Chicago and every other densely populated Black community in America are a reflection of the power of culture and community. Together, we will show up to the ballot and use our collective voices for good."

The NAACP understands the importance of representation in spaces where policy is being shaped for Black Americans. Since Fannie Lou Hamer's 1964 main stage DNC speech, delegations and presence at the conference have become increasingly diverse. The Association will continue to advocate for the rights and freedoms owed to the Black community. Until election day, we remain committed to our civic engagement work, with hopes for Black America to cast ballots to ensure our state, local, and congressional representatives commit to the issues that matter to us.
