West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman to visit Shepherd University

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman will travel around the Eastern Panhandle as part of Shepherd University's 2024-2025 Appalachian Heritage Writer-in-Residence event series.

From September 20-27, Harshman will participate in a series of events and programs that celebrate the heritage and culture of West Virginia and Appalachia.

The events include lectures, workshops, and a photographic exhibit in Shepherd's Scarborough Library featuring work from the Anthology of Appalachian Writers: Ann Pancake Volume XVI.

Events take place at schools and libraries throughout the Eastern Panhandle, and across the state virtually. All events are free and open to the public.

Harshman is a nationally acclaimed children's book author, storyteller, and West Virginia Poet Laureate. His collection of poems, Woman in Red Anorak (WSU Press 2018), won the Blue Lynx Prize for Poetry, while Believe What You Can (WVU Press 2016) won the prestigious Weatherford Award.

Harshman's latest poetry collection Following the Silence (Press 53 2023) has been selected as the 2024 One Book One West Virginia reading selection.

Shepherd University's Center for Appalachian Studies and Communities created and sponsors the Appalachian Heritage Writer-in-Residence event series.

The series receives support from the Shepherd University Foundation, the West Virginia Center for the Book, and the West Virginia Humanities Council.
