Stewart Community Engagement Forum Nov. 8 at UW

The University of Wyoming invites the community to the Stewart Community Engagement Forum Friday, Nov. 8, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Room 506 of Coe Library. This free event is open to all UW students, employees and the public.

The forum will feature presentations from UW faculty members on their service-learning course development, alongside updates from students who received the prestigious Stewart Family Service Award. The event also will provide information on funding opportunities for faculty and students interested in expanding their involvement in service-learning activities in 2025.

Featured speakers include two faculty members selected as Community Engaged Faculty Institute Fellows for the 2023-24 academic year: Dan Fetsco, an assistant lecturer in criminal justice from the College of Arts and Sciences, and Jennifer Ingwerson-Niemann, an associate lecturer in animal science from the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources. They will discuss their efforts to integrate service-learning into their courses.

Students who are 2024 recipients of the Stewart Family Serviceship Award also will present their service projects, each supported by a $5,000 grant:

-- Jessica Petri, an undergraduate student from Green River, will present her project titled "Community Empowerment: Teaching English to Burmese War Refugees for a Brighter Future." In collaboration with Karine National College, she is providing English language instruction to Karenni refugees in Thailand. Petri is pursuing dual degrees in secondary social studies education and political science, with a minor in honors.

-- Graduate students Theresa Andrzejewski, Alison Tassone and Kaitlyn Breitenfeldt will present their project, "Laramie Autism and Developmental Services." This initiative, in partnership with Albany County School District 1 and other local organizations, aims to provide free developmental screenings and ongoing psychological support for youth and families.

Andrzejewski is a fourth-year clinical psychology Ph.D. student with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Samford University. Tassone is a second-year clinical psychology Ph.D. student with a B.S. from Brandeis University and an M.Ed. from Harvard University. Breitenfeldt also is a second-year Ph.D. student in clinical psychology, having majored in psychology at the University of Illinois.

The forum is sponsored by the Stewart Family Serviceship Award, Wallop Civic Engagement Program, Office of Community Engagement and the Service, Leadership and Community Engagement office.
