KT&G Establishes Solar Power Facilities at Yeongju Plant to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

KT&G (CEO Bang Kyung-man) has installed a 2.6MW (megawatt) solar power facility at its Yeongju plant as part of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fulfill its RE100 commitment.

To join the global fight against climate change, KT&G has set medium to long-term greenhouse gas reduction targets based on the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) guidelines and has enhanced its implementation strategies. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

Last year, KT&G declared 2023 as the "Year of Full-Scale Renewable Energy Adoption," announcing plans to increase the proportion of renewable energy used across the group to 80% by 2030 in order to meet the RE100 goal of sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. Currently, the group's renewable energy usage stands at around 18%.

Previously, in June last year, KT&G installed a 3.1MW rooftop solar power system at its Gwangju plant. By 2026, the company plans to expand solar power facilities at its Daejeon, Gwangju, and Gimcheon plants to a total of 18.6MW, continuously increasing the share of renewable energy in its operations.

Oh Chi-beom, Head of KT&G's Production Division, stated, "We expect the rooftop solar installations at KT&G's plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 11,000 tons annually. We will continue to faithfully implement environmental responsibility initiatives through an environmental management system that aligns with global standards."

In addition, KT&G has been recognized as an outstanding company in climate change response and water resource management by the global environmental information assessment organization CDP for both 2023 and 2024. The company has also maintained an AA rating, the highest in its industry, in MSCI's ESG index evaluation for four consecutive years from 2021 to this year, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable ESG management.
