Pedal for Life: cycling to raise awareness on suicide prevention at Lake Eymir, Türkiye

Nearly 100 cyclists pedaled around Lake Eymir in Türkiye to raise awareness on suicide prevention and call for a greater focus on mental well-being. As part of World Suicide Prevention Day, "Pedal for Life: Together We Can Prevent Suicide" was organized under the Social Inclusion of Persons with Mental Disabilities Project, which is co-funded by the European Union and WHO. The natural landmark just outside Türkiye's capital saw cyclists from various sectors and age groups gather together to increase awareness around suicide as a critical public health issue and promote social solidarity in support of mental health.

The event created a space for discussions about mental health with a focus on how communities can come together to support those in need. Participants ranged from mental health professionals, social workers and engineers to students and children united by a shared goal: to promote the message that suicide prevention is possible.

"I learned from the brochure I received that suicide is preventable and that I can support individuals who may be at risk," said Ahmet Fatih Kurnaz, a high school student.

A positive impact

Dr Altin Malaj, Programme Coordinator at the WHO Country Office in Türkiye, emphasized the importance of suicide prevention, adding, "Suicide is a serious public health issue that can be addressed with timely, evidence-based, and often low-cost interventions. With over 720 000 people dying by suicide each year, and it being the third leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29, it's crucial that we take action now."

Feedback from participants highlighted the positive impact of the event. "This ride was not just about cycling; riding together allowed us to meet new people and raise awareness about this important issue," said Çelik Özüduru, a communications expert. The serene surroundings of Lake Eymir provided a fitting backdrop for the tour, offering participants an opportunity to experience the mental health benefits of both physical activity and community support.

Staying connected

The Social Inclusion of Persons with Mental Disabilities Project seeks to reintegrate individuals with mental health conditions into society. By drawing attention to the importance of mental well-being and social inclusion, the event aligned with WHO's broader efforts to create supportive environments for those living with mental disabilities.

As the event concluded, participants underscored the need for continued awareness efforts. With its strong message and participation, "Pedal for Life" successfully contributed to the global campaign of suicide prevention, reinforcing WHO's commitment to raising awareness about mental health and encouraging similar future initiatives.

"We truly have many reasons to live. By cycling and exercising together, we can pedal for life, stay connected, and support one another. In doing so, we can help prevent suicides and remind ourselves of the reasons we have to keep going," said Murat Yumrutaş, President of the Ankara Bicycle and Nature Sports Association.
