Volunteers Sought to Fill Commissions Vacancies

AMES, Iowa - Ames Mayor John Haila is seeking volunteers to fill five open positions on three City of Ames Boards and Commissions. Volunteers would fill out the remainder of the unexpired term, and the positions would be eligible for reappointment.

Interested candidates must be residents of Ames and may fill out an application online at www.CityOfAmes.org/BoardsAndCommissions. Paper applications are available in the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 515 Clark Ave. Applications are due by Friday, Oct. 25.

  • Library Board of Trustees: One volunteer is needed to fill a vacancy on this board. The Library Board has control and supervision of the library. The Board is responsible for budget, approves expenditures, develops long-range goals, and establishes rules and regulations. The Board meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.
  • Property Maintenance Appeals Board: Two volunteers are needed to fill vacancies on this board, which hears appeals on decisions of the Building Official in regard to interpretation and application of the City's Rental Housing Code. The board consists of seven members representing constituencies including landlords, tenants, and contractors. The open positions include a student tenant and a licensed general contractor. This board meets the first Thursday of each month if needed. There is no meeting unless there has been an appeal or other business requires Board action.
  • Public Art Commission (PAC): Two volunteers are needed to fill vacancies on this commission. PAC establishes public art philosophy and develops a public art plan for the community. The Commission monitors the public art budget and recommends funding allocations for public art within City facilities. The Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

The City of Ames supports diversity of representation on its boards and commissions and encourages all Ames residents ages 18 and older to consider volunteering. For more information, visit the City of Ames website at www.CityofAmes.org/BoardsAndCommissions.
