Mattapan Officers Arrest Suspect Following a Shot Spotter Activation

At about 8:47 PM, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Jonathan Velazquez, 20, of Charlestown, on firearm charges.

Officers responded to the area of 180 Stratton Street for a Shot Spotter activation. Officers began to canvass the area and located ballistic evidence and damage to a motor vehicle. Officers also observed ballistic damage to an apartment window.

Detectives were able to view video surveillance and broadcasted a description of possible suspects. Shortly after, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force advised detectives that they observed the vehicle in the area twenty minutes before the shots fired incident.

After further investigation, officers observed the suspect's vehicle in the area of 3 Meadowbank Road. Officers observed a suspect exit an apartment building and enter the vehicle.

Officers began to follow the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the area of 168 River Street. Officers requested the operator's license and registration which revealed that his license was suspended. Officers requested the operator to exit the vehicle and he was placed into handcuffs.

During a motor vehicle inventory search, officers located a 9mm cartridge inside the vehicle. The vehicle was towed from the scene and secured pending a search warrant. Officers returned to the address that the suspect exited and after further investigation they recovered a loaded thirty round magazine.

Velazquez was placed under arrest and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, and Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
