Doylestown Hospital Appoints Anthony Tran, MD, as Woodall Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Doylestown Health recently appointed Anthony Tran, MD, as the Marvin and Dee Ann Woodall Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery, according to Doylestown Health's Chief Medical Officer, Sean Reinhardt, MD.

One of the highest forms of recognition for a physician's scholarship, teaching, and expertise, the endowed chair position provides a sustainable source of funds dedicated to the enhancement of cardiothoracic surgery at Doylestown Hospital.

Dr. Tran is a board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeon, highly experienced in all aspects of adult cardiothoracic surgery, with advanced expertise in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and complex valve repair and reconstruction.

"In choosing to fund this lasting tribute, they not only further enable Doylestown Health to attract and retain physicians of excellence, but continue to elevate our heart and vascular care by honoring Dr. Tran, whose leadership and skill have made a momentous impact on our cardiothoracic surgery program."

After joining Doylestown Health in 2022, Dr. Tran initiated a minimally invasive mitral valve program, opening the door for patients to have complex mitral valve repairs and multiple valve surgeries performed through tiny incisions. He also introduced robotic-assisted coronary bypass and robotic-assisted lung surgery programs to Doylestown Health.

When medically appropriate, minimally invasive options, including robotic-assisted surgeries, can benefit patients by reducing recovery times, improving outcomes, and promoting patient satisfaction, according to Dr. Reinhardt.

Dr. Tran's contributions have led to a significant increase in mitral and aortic valve surgeries, both open and minimally invasive, with excellent outcomes.

"In addition to his remarkable expertise in advanced and minimally invasive surgical techniques, Dr. Tran's dedication to patients, combined with his focus on quality outcomes, research, and education, will help ensure that patients have access to high-quality, advanced cardiothoracic surgical care at Doylestown Health."

Before coming to Doylestown Health, Dr. Tran completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at nationally ranked Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - Plano - only one of the few centers in the country to be given 3-stars in all heart surgery categories by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His training consisted of extensive training in both traditional open surgery and advanced minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery.

As the recipient of numerous fellowship awards from the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Tran has undergone additional training in atrial fibrillation surgery and application of robotic platforms. In addition, he has delivered presentations to colleagues at national conferences with his work appearing in peer-reviewed journals, including Perfusion, Circulation, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Cardiothoracic Disease, and Current Challenges in Thoracic Surgery.

During his career in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, Marv Woodall led the team that developed the first balloon expandable stents, a revolutionary advancement in minimally-invasive heart and vascular care. Dee Ann has been a member of the Village Improvement Association since 1985.

The Woodalls have contributed generously to Doylestown Health for more than 30 years. Their early support of ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health established the Woodall Center for Heart and Vascular Care, centralizing all Doylestown Hospital's cardiovascular services within a comprehensive program. The couple also supported the Emergency Department Campaign, Friends of the Heart Institute, the Woodall Chest Pain Center, and the Nursing Scholarship Program.
