US-23 culvert replacement south of Mackinaw City starts Sept. 3

GAYLORD, Mich. -The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin culvert replacement and tree clearing along US-23 between South Huron Avenue in Mackinaw City and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park in Cheboygan County. The work represents initial work as part of a $17 million road rebuilding project on the corridor scheduled to resume next spring.

Traffic restrictions:
Work on the box culvert will require a lane closure with one lane of alternating traffic controlled by a temporary traffic signal. Tree clearing will require shoulder closures.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 206 jobs.

Project background:
This $17 million investment includes rebuilding the roadway, box culvert and cross culvert replacement, tree clearing, and rumble strips and pavement markings. Work this fall includes replacing the box culvert and cross culverts, as well as tree clearing within MDOT right of way to improve safety and sight distance for drivers. Work will resume in April 2025 with roadway rebuilding and is expected to continue through the end of October 2025.
