(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State University signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that solidified ties between the institutions and sets the table for experiential learning and job opportunities for students. Other focus points include promoting faculty development and research opportunities, enhancing environmental science program development and supporting the university in its sustainability initiatives.

"We're thrilled to deepen our relationship with the EPA and to see us grow the amazing work that has been underway here," said Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux. "This MOU between Bowie State University and the Environmental Protection Agency is a strategic collaborative partnership that builds on our history and legacy. Bowie State University and the EPA have been in partnership with the goal of providing educational and practical experiences for students looking to enter careers in the federal government."

Bowie State signed its first MOU with the EPA in 2009 with the goal of promoting student recruitment, service learning and internships, career development and employment opportunities. Dr. Breaux asserted that expanding that relationship with the federal agency would only increase the potential benefits for students and the university's ability to address the environmental issues facing the country.

"Our recommitment today includes expanding the MOU to provide even more opportunities for BSU, and also for us to have an exchange of information, ideas and innovation," said Dr. Breaux. "Our expanded MOU provides community development and engagement opportunities for students, partnerships for regional communities and potential opportunities with the surrounding community on environmental, health and economic issues."

Deputy Assistant Administrator Cecil Rodrigues also noted that the partnership is a reflection of the EPA's commitment to working with HBCUs to train and develop the next generation of professionals that will serve as the stewards for environmental issues.

"Working with minority serving institutions is a priority of this administration, and we are fully committed to making this a great partnership," said Rodrigues. "The participation of HBCUs in federal programs promotes infrastructure development, increases the capacity to provide higher quality education and increases the supply of trained, diverse professionals. This is an opportunity for us to share our expertise and learn from all of you and grow as an organization."
