Extended school days mean great opportunities for families

On September 3, Mayor Parker's Extended Day/Extended Year program kicked off in 25 schools across Philadelphia, part of her promise to close the enrichment gap for Philadelphia students and support working families.

The programs are available in 20 Philadelphia School District Schools and five charter schools.

EDEY schools are open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, providing free before and after school care. EDEY school will also offer more sports and enrichment programs, including chess, arts, and coding to help students find new interests and passions. These programs advance Mayor Parker's goal to increase access to economic opportunities.

Students in enrichment programs have better attendance, are often more engaged in school, and feel more like they belong. When children spend more time in school, their grades and test scores improve.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The extended day/extended year programs are completely voluntary.
  • While all programs are free families must register for before-school and after-school programs. Registration forms are available at participating schools.
  • EDEY programs are run by trusted nonprofit organizations with roots in the school community.
  • In the 2024 - 2025 school year, the pilot schools will be open during school district half days, winter break, spring break, and six weeks during the summer.
  • Enrollment will stay open until all seats are filled. New enrichment programs will be added throughout the year.

Philadelphia also provides Out-of-School Time (OST) Programs through the Office of Children and Families at more than 100 school sites. Find a program that best suits your child by visiting the city's OST Program Locator, then reach out directly to the agency listed for enrollment information.
