Heartwarming Tradition Continues - 17th Annual Kids Holiday Shopping Spree On Thursday, December 19

December 17, 2024

Boise Parks and Recreation is proud to once again host its cherished annual event, the Kids Holiday Shopping Spree, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 19 at Target on Eagle Road (6280 N. Eagle Road). This seasonal tradition brings together 160 students from Boise Parks and Recreation's after-school programs for a celebration of holiday joy and giving.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Howell Family Foundation, each child receives $40 to shop for gifts for themselves and their loved ones. Participants are selected each year from the City of Boise's eight school-based community centers, which are located at Grace Jordan, Hillcrest, Jefferson, McMillan, Morley Nelson, Taft, Whitney, and Whittier Elementary Schools. Boise Parks and Recreation provides free programs for elementary school kids at these schools in partnership with the Boise School District and the West Ada School District.

"This event embodies the spirit of the season and it's one our team looks forward to every year," said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. "It's a chance for children to experience the joy of giving while feeling supported by their community. This year's incredible contribution from the Howell family makes it possible for each kid to enjoy the holiday shopping experience."

This is the 17th year the City of Boise has hosted the holiday shopping spree event. While a collection of community donations typically funds the shopping spree, the Howell Family Foundation is funding the event in its entirety this year. The foundation is a longtime supporter of the Boise community, including the 2018 donation of property for the future Sue Howell Park site.

"We are pleased to be a part of this exciting annual event and brighten the lives of children from across Boise," added Sue Howell. "What makes living in the Treasure Valley so special is the generosity of our residents, and we are honored to be able to give back in this way."

Volunteers & Donations

Community volunteers help make this annual event possible as they each partner with a child and help guide them as they shop. Thanks to resounding support from the community, all volunteer positions have been filled for this year's event.
