City of Greeley Announces Trail and Poudre Ponds Upgrades

Temporary closures begin November 27 for safety and sustainability

GREELEY, Colo. - The City of Greeley will enhance its trail system and Poudre Ponds Recreational Fishery starting November 27. Poudre Ponds and two sections of the Poudre River Trail will close as crews will undertake several significant improvement projects. The city is doing this work to ensure these cherished spaces remain safe, functional and enjoyable for the public for years to come.

Concrete Repairs (West of 35th Avenue) and Gate Installation at Poudre Ponds

On November 27 and December 2, no vehicles can enter or exit Poudre Ponds while a new gate is installed.

The first trail closure will repair a section of damaged concrete. This closure impacts the Poudre Trail from Rover Run Dog Park east to 35th Avenue. The trail will close on December 4 and reopen on December 6, weather permitting. For more information on this project, contact 970-350-9205 or email [email protected].

Riverbank Stabilization (East of 35th Avenue)

The second trail project addresses riverbank erosion and will close the trail from December 9 through March 2025. This section of trail extends from 25th to 35th Avenue. There are several important reasons for stabilizing the riverbank:

  • Flood protection
  • Protection of Poudre Ponds' water supply
  • Improved safety for trail users
  • Removal of debris for a healthier environment

Mining and Enhancements

Poudre Ponds play a crucial role in managing Greeley's water resources. Current work will drain Pond A for gravel mining and increase the site's non-potable water storage capacity to 3,000 acre-feet. Mining is expected to conclude by late 2025 or early 2026. Recreational improvements like fishing and non-motorized vehicles are also a part of this project. Poudre Ponds will be closed long-term starting on December 9.
