Chair Cardin Welcomes Home Evan Gershkovich at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON - This week, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement after meeting with Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was recently freed following nearly 16 months of wrongful detention in Russia.

"Evan's safe return to the United States is a profound relief for our nation, made possible by the tireless efforts of his family - especially his sister Danielle and his parents, Ella and Mikhail and the dedicated diplomatic efforts of the Biden-Harris administration. Make no mistake: The Kremlin's cruel and wrongful imprisonment of Evan was a blatant act of repression and an attack on truth itself. While our country welcomes him home, our shared fight continues for every American unjustly held in Russia and around the world."
