Partnering for STEM: ICGEB outreach in Kenya

Following the donation of thirty Foldscopes from ICGEB Cape Town to Karuri High School in Nairobi, Kenya, ICGEB Cape Town coordinated a two-day virtual practical Foldscope workshop.

Introduced by NACOSTI Director General and CEO Prof Walter Oyawa, the ICGEB has partnered with Karuri High School in their STEM activities.

The training, led by the ICGEB Cape Town's Cancer Genomics researcher, Dr Mariet Wium, aimed to introduce science teachers from Karuri High School to the basic principles of the Foldscope, how to assemble it, using it in the classroom setting as well as outdoors, and it's benefit as an educational resource tool.

Commenting on this partnership, Deputy School Principal Salome Wambui adds 'Foldscopes donated by ICGEB to Karuri High School will help biology students learn and understand the microscopic world. They will be able to use them inside and outside the laboratories. Through these activities, we are encouraging students to consider a career in STEM, and very much hope that these students will later become career microbiologists'.

The Foldscopes will be a key resource tool of the School's Science Program, strengthening and supporting science understanding.

Contributing to a vibrant scientific community and disseminating knowledge, truth and enthusiasm for science are concepts that are integral to the mission of the ICGEB. The ICGEB Cape Town Component runs several Foldscope workshops across South Africa and the Continent, introducing young learners to science, and teachers and researchers to it's benefit as an educational resource tool.
