Hurricane Ernesto is not expected to impact the area directly, but its effects will likely cause strong rip currents throughout the weekend.

As Volusia County lifeguards are skilled in detecting rip currents, beach visitors are encouraged to follow all given announcements and instructions. Beachgoers should avoid water deeper than waist height, even when using a boogie board or other floatation aids. Particular caution is urged for small children and novice swimmers to stick to shallow areas, and adults should always accompany children in the water. Regardless of ocean or weather conditions, it is recommended to always swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower.

If caught in a rip current, swimmers should not panic. Instead, swim parallel to the shore to escape the current, then head back to land. If reaching the shore is not possible, signal for help immediately.

Observers should call 911 immediately in an emergency. Download the Volusia Beaches app for information on staffed lifeguard tower locations and beach and weather conditions.
