SUBJ/UNITED STATES AIR FORCE 77TH BIRTHDAY//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. On behalf of Marines everywhere, I am honored to
congratulate the United States Air Force on its 77th birthday.
2. On 26 July 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National
Security Act, which eventually brought the Nation's military
services together under a singular Department of Defense. The act
also created an independent Department of the Air Force to stand
alongside the Army and Navy. On 18 September 1947, the United
States Air Force was formally established, becoming the Nation's
first military branch dedicated exclusively to air power. The new
Air Force inherited a proud heritage stretching from the infancy of
powered flight through combat success in two world wars. In the
years since, American airmen have built a legacy all their own.
They have distinguished themselves in every conflict from the
Korean War through the Global War on Terrorism, while also deterring
our nation's adversaries.
3. The Marine Corps looks forward to the future, secure in the
knowledge that the U.S. Air Force will continue its long history of
excellence in airpower. Marines are proud to share the skies with
our Air Force brothers and sisters. Happy Birthday, Airmen!
4. Semper Fidelis, Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.
