Chile is one of the countries at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development in our region. This is according to the 2024 Latin American Index of Artificial Intelligence (ILIA), prepared by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA).

This is an important recognition considering that it is the first regional public study in this area. Furthermore, Chile leads the index for the second consecutive year, this time with the incorporation of more countries (19).

The main objective of the index is to evaluate the installed capacities in Latin American and Caribbean countries in relation to artificial intelligence. These capacities include key aspects such as infrastructure, human capital, data availability, regulations, citizen participation and strategic areas of development.

It should be noted that the 2024 edition of the ILIA has expanded its geographical scope. It currently covers 19 countries in total and has updated its indicator matrix, analyzing 76 variables focused on three main dimensions:

  • Enabling Factors and Research
  • Development and Adoption
  • Governance

These dimensions allow for a comprehensive view of the AI ecosystem in the region, facilitating the identification of strategic opportunities and the adoption of public policies to promote the sustainable development of artificial intelligence.

Chile is once again positioned as one of the best-performing countries in several key areas of the 2024 ILIA. In terms of overall rating, Chile ranks among the regional leaders in governance, infrastructure, human talent, research, development and AI adoption. Specifically, Chile holds a prominent position in the global research, development and adoption (R&D&A) rating, alongside countries such as Brazil and Uruguay. Our country also leads in the subdimension of infrastructure and human talent, showing a high capacity for AI training and development.
