Stouffville - Construction is underway at The Village of Stouffer Mills, a new 192-bed long-term care home in Whitchurch-Stouffville. This new home is one of 67 long-term care home projects fast-tracked last fall with support from the Ontario government's increased construction funding subsidy. This is part of the government's commitment to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.

"Congratulations to the team at The Village of Stouffer Mills on the construction of this new home. Our government is fixing long-term care and ensuring we build homes for seniors in the communities they helped build," said Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care. "Today marks a significant milestone for the Town of Stouffville. When construction is complete, 192 residents will have a new, modern and comfortable place to call home."

Construction of the new Village of Stouffer Mills building is the first of three phases to build a campus-of-care for seniors that includes accommodation and outreach programs across the region. A campus of care helps integrate the long-term care home into the broader health care system and ensures residents can conveniently connect to the care they need.

The 192-bed building will feature several design improvements, including a 32-bed resident home area (RHA) on all six floors. The RHAs create a more intimate and familiar living space, with dining and activity areas, lounges and bedrooms. The design also features extensive common spaces along the 'Main Street' of the home that links the individual home areas with the broader community.

As a result of the government's increase to the construction funding subsidy, which was designed to stimulate the start of construction for more long-term care homes across Ontario, 67 projects including The Village of Stouffer Mills, received ministry approval to construct between April 1, 2022 and August 31, 2023. This means 11,199 new and upgraded beds are being built to modern design standards across the province. Due to the success of this initiative, on April 23, 2024, the government announced an extension to the construction funding subsidy for all eligible projects approved to construct by November 30, 2024.

The government is fixing long-term care to ensure Ontario's seniors get the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve. The plan is built on four pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need.
