Facts about Upcoming Special Election

Within 10 days….

The City Council must hold a meeting to decide on a date for the special election.
  • That election date must be between 30-45 days of the meeting.
  • The Municipal clerk must publish in a newspaper the date of the special election once a week for three consecutive weeks before the special election date.
  • A notice of the special election must also be posted in City Hall.
  • Each candidate must qualify by petition filed with the Municipal Clerk at least twenty (20) days before the date of the election.
  • The petition must contain the names of at least fifty (50) qualified municipal electors. Qualifying packets will be available for pickup at the City Clerk's office once the election date is set.
  • There is no qualifying fee for candidates in Municipal Special Elections.
  • The candidate receiving a majority of the votes wins.
  • If no candidate receives a majority vote, the two candidates with the most votes will head to a run-off.
  • If only one (1) person qualifies to run, there will be no election and that person must be appointed.
  • If no one qualifies, there won't be an election, and someone will be appointed to fill the vacancy by the Mayor.
