The Consequences of the Biden Harris Administration's Open Borders Policies: The Case of Laken Riley's Murderer

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, the House Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement released an interim reportregarding Jose Ibarra, an illegal alien who crossed the border, was released into the country by Biden-Harris Administration, and allegedly murdered 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia.

The Committee's review of Jose Ibarra's A-file reveals that the Biden-Harris
Administration's border policies ensured Jose Ibarra's release into the United States nearly two years ago. Despite having lived safely in Ecuador from January 2017 through July 2022, in 2022 Ibarra traveled to the United States, potentially drawn by President Biden's and Vice President Harris's open-borders, no-consequence immigration policies. Border Patrol apprehended Jose Ibarra in September 2022, and the Biden-Harris Administration released Ibarra into the United States just one day later because it determined that Ibarra's release was warranted due to "urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit."

On February 22, 2024, Jose Ibarra allegedly murdered 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. Riley's body was found on the University of Georgia campus after going for a run. A day later, authorities arrested the 26-year-old Venezuelan national in connection with Riley's murder and charged him with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another.

The disastrous immigration policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have had real world consequences for American citizens. The effects of those policies will be felt for years to come, with criminal aliens in American neighborhoods harming families and hurting public safety across the country. Tragically, Laken Riley and her family are not criminal illegal aliens' only victims.

The Committee and its Subcommittee also released an interim reportregarding Diego Ibarra, the brother of Jose Ibarra, who was released into the United States in 2023 despite his apparent gang membership and assault of a Border Patrol agent.

The Committee's review of Diego Ibarra's A-file reveals that the Biden-Harris Administration released Ibarra after Border Patrol agents apprehended him in April 2023, in the El Paso Border Patrol sector. Diego allegedly assaulted and attempted to bite a Border Patrol agent who tried to arrest him. Upon apprehension, Diego was placed in expedited removal proceedings, during which he claimed a fear of persecution. Nonetheless, after being arrested by Border Patrol agents, Diego refused to answer basic questions about why he traveled to the United States, including questions about why he departed his home country and, at least initially, whether he feared returning there. Despite his assault of a Border Patrol agent, Diego's A-file reveals that the Biden-Harris FBI decided not to prosecute Ibarra.
