Ahead of the 2025/2026 budget process, today Caroline Russell AM pressed the Mayor to devote more funding toward building toilets on the tube.
The Mayor thanked Caroline for bringing Transport for All to City Hall last week to present their report, the Accessibility Review of the PTAL Index. [1] The report suggested three new criteria to include in future transport accessibility designations, including whether a station had a public toilet.
Further applauding Caroline's work, the Mayor noted how much he "admired" her dedication to the toilets cause, and how integral her voice was to persuading him to allocate £3 million per year for the next five years to build toilets across the Transport for London (TfL) network. While significantly less than the £20 million her report called for, the investment represented a major step in making the TfL network more accessible to all riders. [2]
Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell said:
"Public toilets play a critical role in making London healthier and more accessible, so I'm glad to see the Mayor's team making such a solid start on getting some much needed loos installed.
"While I appreciate the Mayor's kind words, I hope to see a step change in investment in toilets in next year's budget.
"I'm worried that the proposed twenty minutes travel between stations with loos is simply too long for Londoners experiencing urgency. We can and we must do better so that every Londoner can travel with confidence."
