Press Release: Atlanta City Council Should Approve Funding for PAD Program

ATLANTA - Andrea Young, Executive Director the ACLU of Georgia spoke at today's Atlanta City Council meeting imploring council members to approve the $5 million contract awarded to the Policing Alternatives and Diversion (PAD) program. The Council approved the PAD program in July 2024, but has yet to award the required funding.

PAD is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization that works to reduce the arrest and imprisonment of people experiencing extreme poverty, substance use, and mental health concerns. Identified as a key recommendation for reducing issues surrounding safety and overcrowding at the Fulton County Jail, the ACLU of Georgia has been a staunch proponent of diversion programs that reduce incarceration and provide people with resources that potentially circumvent criminal activity.

The ACLU of Georgia has also submitted a letter to the council's 16 members last week, highlighting the need for approval of the contract as awarded.
