In January, a pilot program to collect bulk residential items will be offered for Bismarck residents. This program will run through July and its utilization will be evaluated and its long-term implementation will be decided.
This program is the result of garbage collection changes to how extras are collected. In early 2024, Public Works Service Operations Director Steve Salwei presented to the Bismarck City Commission that the multipack trucks used by the City were no longer available. The available garbage trucks that will begin to replace the Public Works fleet do not easily allow for extras, items that do not fit in a resident's 96-gallon garbage can, to be collected.
"The results of the survey we conducted in 2024 shared that bulky household items were primarily what constituted residents' extras," said Public Works Service Operations Director Steve Salwei. "That survey also identified residents' desire to keep the cost of collection down and that this type of program was a preferred option, going forward."
Residents wishing to have bulk items collected must contact Public Works to initiate the curbside pickup of these items. This service will cost a $20 service fee, for up to five items collected that day, plus the landfill disposal cost for each item. Items will not be collected in April due to the Spring Cleanup Week that month.
