Southwestern Adventist University is pleased to announce the appointment of George W. Vander Veer as the new Vice President for Advancement. Vander Veer brings extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, legal counsel, and social services, positioning him to play a key role in advancing the University's mission and expanding its impact.
Vander Veer joins Southwestern from DiscoverU, a Houston-based nonprofit, where he served as Executive Director since 2017. Under his leadership, DiscoverU grew rapidly, increasing the communities it served by 100% annually for four consecutive years. His innovative fundraising strategies boosted the organization's revenue from $150,000 to over $2 million annually, showcasing his proven track record.
Prior to his time at DiscoverU, Vander Veer practiced law, focusing on providing legal services to nonprofits and small businesses. His nonprofit law expertise and commitment to community development have supported numerous organizations in Houston and beyond.
Vander Veer also has extensive experience in social work, having worked with nonprofit and state agencies, including the Texas Department of Child and Protective Services and SEARCH Homeless Services. His leadership in securing over $3 million in annual grants for at-risk youth through Communities In Schools of Houston highlights his dedication to supporting underserved populations.
A graduate of Southwestern Adventist University, Vander Veer holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law, a Master of Social Work from Walla Walla University, and a Bachelor of Science in Social Science with an emphasis in Economics and Political Science. His return to Southwestern Adventist University marks a true homecoming.
