FASEB Provides Feedback on NSF's RFI on Research Ethics in CHIPS and Science Act
Monday, November 18, 2024
On November 14, FASEB transmitted
comments in response to a
Request for Information issued by the National Science Foundation (NSF) seeking input on ways to incorporate ethical, social, safety, and security considerations into the agency's merit review process as well as develop strategies to mitigate potential harms that could result from research activities.
FASEB elected to provide feedback on three of the seven questions, with a key theme recommending NSF refer to strategies adopted by other science agencies to address ethical, social, safety, and/or security considerations in research design and ensure these principles are core to the responsible conduct of research training for NSF-supported scientists. Similarly, FASEB's comments highlighted the need for NSF to establish a uniform process for evaluating these considerations outside of the Merit Review process.
