From highway concessions to major works and the application of the most advanced technologies in infrastructure, the ASTM Group continues to develop innovative projects with the aim of improving the safety, efficiency and sustainability of transport infrastructure.
A concrete example is the project carried out for the A12 Sestri Levante - Livorno that involved, in a One Company perspective, Cdt (former SALT), the Group's concessionaire for the stretch, Sinelec, ASTM's technological arm, SINA, the Group's engineering company, together with the supplier Sprinx, an Independent Software Vendor specialized in the development of video intelligent software platforms based on AI. The concessionaire wanted to improve the performance of the Automatic Incident Detection system (AID), which, due to the high level of traffic, was proven false alarms resulting in the activation of the Control Room operators, who were responsible for the traffic flow and the proper functioning of the devices distributed along the section. The A12 Sestri Levante - Livorno, for example, alone has 500 cameras of which about 400 are in tunnels.
The working group thus decided to engage Artificial Intelligence on the AID analyzer servers, without intervening on the existing field devices, thus avoiding impacts on the road system. A key role was played by the fine tuning carried out four-handedly by the concessionaire with its Control Room staff and Sprinx specialists who tested, experimented and constantly monitored the results of the system, ensuring that it achieved the highest levels of reliability and safety.
The results exceeded expectations, with a reduction of more than 70 percent in false alarms and a consequent halving of intervention times in cases of actual need, ensuring Control Room operators more efficient management of events. These performances prompted the Group to extend the application of artificial intelligence also on the A15 Parma - La Spezia and to consider the integration of additional video detections, demonstrating how this project is destined to grow and evolve, offering increasing benefits to the entire freeway concessions sector.
