STANFORD, CA-Leaders of the California legal, business and academic communities will join the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) as it celebrates its 50th anniversary year at an Access to Justice Forum to be held on Tuesday, September 17 at Stanford Law School.

The largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans, LSC was established by Congress in 1974. To mark its 50th anniversary, LSC is holding a series of nationwide events on access to legal services and "Protecting the Promise" of equal justice.

LSC's 2022 Justice Gap report found that low-income Americans received no or insufficient legal help for 92% of their civil legal problems. This free forum will educate attendees about the justice gap, offer insights into solutions and serve as a call-to-action for how attendees can get involved. Topics will include technological innovation and collaborative community support as two key approaches to bridging the justice gap.

Speakers will include Nora Freeman Engstrom, Co-Director of the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession; John Levi, LSC Board Chairman; Kate Adams, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Apple; David Freeman Engstrom, Co-Director of the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession; Alexis Amezcua, Partner at Morrison Foerster; and Colin Murray, North America CEO of Baker McKenzie. U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler (CA) and U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) will share recorded remarks at the event via video.

A panel discussion on increasing support for civil legal aid will feature:

  • Claire Solot, Co-Founder, Legal Services Funder Network
  • Margaret Hagan, Executive Director, Legal Design Lab, Stanford Law School
  • Genevieve Richardson, Executive Director, Bay Area Legal Aid
  • Monica Yu, Chief Development Officer, California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc.
  • Ron Flagg, President of LSC (Moderator)

David Freeman Engstrom will give a presentation, "Filing Fairness: Innovating ways to close the justice gap."

The event, hosted by Stanford Law School, is sponsored by Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, Baker McKenzie LLP, Morrison Foerster, Keker, Van Nest and Peters LLP, Fenwick West, and Sidley Austin.

The symposium is open to the public and will be held at 3:30 p.m. PST in Stanford Law School's Room 290 with a reception following the program. Those interested in attending in person should register. The event will also be viewable virtually through Zoom. Registration for Zoom access is available here.
