Getting to Know Keyes Dean of the College of Business Administration Andrew DeGuire

Andrew DeGuire was named James H. Keyes Dean of Business Administration in December and began in his new role at the beginning of July. A 1993 alumnus and former vice president of corporate strategy at Northwestern Mutual, DeGuire sat down with Marquette Today to discuss his deep Marquette roots, his love for the outdoors and more.

Hometown: Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

Tell us about your family:

I have a very large Marquette family. My parents have nine kids - six boys and three girls - and everyone has a Marquette degree in one fashion or another. That has continued to the next generation; many of their kids go to Marquette too.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests?

I like to bike ride around town, visit beer gardens and get out on a kayak. Green Lake is my favorite kayaking spot. I also like to play golf.

What are your favorite movies?

"Shawshank Redemption," any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and "The Princess Bride."

Who are/is your hero(es)?

Joe Daniels, the former dean of the college. He was my adviser.

Any favorite quotes/mottos?

"Just keep swimming" from Finding Nemo!

What are you currently reading?

"Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Any favorite vacation spots?

Too many! Any of the national parks, Banff and Lake Louise in Canada, Sanibel Island in Florida.

What was your biggest career learning experience?

My biggest career lesson is that you should work with people that you like and trust. That will make your career more meaningful and you'll perform better on the job.

Any fun facts people should know about you?

Two truths and a lie:

1. I have over two million frequent flier miles.

2. I've met a president of the United States.

3. My parents met Mother Teresa.

(Number one is the lie, I only have about a million over the course of my career.)

What most excites you about being at Marquette?

The people. We're all here to serve a common mission.
