Congressman Thompson Announces $1.77 Million Grant Awarded to Mississippi State Department of Health to Combat Violence Against Women

BOLTON, MS- Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) is proud to announce that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has awarded a grant of $1,776,048 to the Mississippi State Department of Health. This grant is part of the Fiscal Year 2024 STOP (Services, Training, Officers, and Prosecutors) Formula Grant Program, which provides critical funding to address and combat violence against women.

The STOP Formula Grant Program was authorized by the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 and reauthorized by subsequent legislation. It encourages partnerships between law enforcement, prosecution, courts, and victim services organizations to enhance victim safety and hold offenders accountable in cases of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The goal of the program is to develop and strengthen law enforcement, prosecution, and court strategies to combat violent crimes against women while improving and expanding victim services, including community-based and culturally specific services.

The awarded funds will support state and local efforts to implement effective strategies and increase training for law enforcement and prosecutors, enhance victim services, and strengthen coordinated community responses.
