The reference book on fungal diseases of the grapevine has been comprehensively updated. It is currently available in English free of charge through open access.
The book Science of Fungi in Grapevine delves to the heart of interactions between fungi and grapevines, exploring modern mycological classifications, pathogens, mycobiomes, endophytes and mycorrhizae. Inspired by the key reference work La Vigne, Maladies Fongiques - winner of the 2015 OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) book award - this updated version by Olivier Viret, head of the Centre of Excellence for Viniviticulture, Speciality Crops and Crop Protection at the Directorate-General for Agriculture, Viticulture and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV) and Katia Gindro, head of the mycology group at Agroscope, features contributions from renowned experts, including Valérie Hofstetter, Léonie Pellissier end Pierre-Henri Dubuis.
The introduction describes the origins and adaptability of the grapevine in response to evolving fungal diseases, alongside an overview of its biology, epidemiology, and control strategies. The second chapter deals with the systematics of the genus Vitis, the developmental stages of vine, the anatomy of various organs, the evolution of resistant varieties and its natural defence mechanisms.
A significant proportion of the book is concerned with recent advances in mycology, including chapters devoted to fungal systematics and the novel concepts of holobiome, microbiome and mycobiome in relation to grapevines.
The third part examines in detail fungal diseases affecting green organs, wood and roots, illustrated at macroscopic, microscopic and ultrastructural levels, and explores disease cycles and epidemiology. There is also a chapter dedicated to grafting systems and the specificity of fungi in nurseries.
The final chapter addresses methods of controlling fungal diseases, from historical perspectives to modern active substances, including sections on natural fungicides and integrated pest management. It also covers application methods, the calibration of spraying equipment, drift reduction and best practice for the storage and handling of fungicides.
This reference book containing over 460 richly illustrated pages is essential reading for scientists, students and professionals, offering practical knowledge and a rich scientific background based on over 30 years of research.
Available in digital format (PF and ebook: Science of Fungi in Grapevine | SpringerLink) or as a hard copy, this book offers valuable insights into the complex interactions between fungi and grapevines.
