Katri Kalske, Deputy Mayor for Education and Learning, reflects on the well-being of Vantaa's children and young people; and what we can do together to improve safety, in an editorial in the summer residents' magazine.

Although the sad events of spring have shaken the sense of security of our children and young people, it is still safe to go to school in our city. The safety management of our schools has been developed over a long period of time, and school safety guidelines and action plans for safety incidents are up to date.

We have up-to-date safety plans in Vantaa schools, as well as crisis plans, which we practice regularly with pupils and staff. Long-term work and consistent training help us to respond to situations in the right way. In our schools, bullying and fights are dealt with as soon as school staff are aware of them.

The focus of anti-bullying work in nurseries, schools and colleges should be on preventive measures. We will improve the safety of children and young people through school coaches, anti-bullying work and youth work in schools. We also work closely with parents and carers.

We will develop the whole of Vantaa in such a way that regional disparities are reduced, so that well-being is spread across the city. This is the best preventive work, which guarantees the safety of all of us and restores a momentarily diminished sense of security.

We reach a wide range of families in the local area through nurseries and schools, which is why they are real potential community hubs, bringing people together and creating opportunities to network and find a place in their community.

School safety comes from public safety, which is created not only by the actions of the city, but also by the actions, behaviour and words of Vantaa citizens. So I hope all homes and neighbourhoods will care about each other and talk with children and young people about how we each build a safe city!

We need to bring things to light, we need to ask for help and we need to be able to offer it, so that our children and young people can do well in Vantaa!
