Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Hosts Roundtable on Future of Career and Technical Education with Northern Illinois Labor and Education Leaders

ROCKFORD, IL - Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) convened a roundtable on workforce development with Northern Illinois labor and education leaders at Rock Valley College Aviation Career Education Center. The discussion, which featured prominent leaders from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the Northwestern Illinois Building Trades Union, focused on how to use federal career and technical education (CTE) funding to ensure Illinoisans can succeed and grow the state's economy. The roundtable also touched on challenges faced by students, workers, and employers.

"A ticket to the Middle Class should not require a four-year degree, and institutions like the Rock Valley College Aviation Career Education Center will make sure graduates' careers take off," Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. "With many Illinoisans using high-quality CTE programs to build successful careers, it's crucial to leverage federal and state funding in the most effective way possible to continue that trend. By bringing together workforce development leaders and educators for these discussions, we are ensuring our economy grows and provides a path forward for all Illinoisans to thrive."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi has been a congressional leader in the field of CTE during his time in Congress, authoring and passing the bipartisan Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act that increased funding for CTE programs by $1.3 billion per year. Congressman Krishnamoorthi also introduced the Opportunity to Compete Act to ensure that computer hiring systems do not automatically dismiss candidates who lack a four-year degree but have relevant job experience.
