I-85 Widening, Phase III Project Opens Additional NB Lane

JACKSON COUNTY, GA - Overnight, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors opened the remaining segment of the new third lane on Interstate 85 northbound from US 129 to US 441, just in time for the projected heavy Labor Day travel period. Throughout August, the project team has made progress bringing segments of the project online as they have been completed.

The 13-mile project is widening I-85 northbound and southbound from two to three lanes from US 129 to US 441. Construction is also replacing and widening four mainline bridges in two locations. This builds upon the widening completed as part of the previous I-85 Widening, Phase 1 and Phase 2 projects. These projects are part of the long-range plan to widen I-85 to the South Carolina state line increasing capacity and improving traffic flow through the corridor.

With six miles of the southbound portion of the project already open to traffic, the project's overall completion is anticipated in September.

Georgia DOT encourages motorists to drive safely through the work zone as crews continue efforts to finalize the project. Follow posted signage and watch for workers.
