BCI Construction begins renovation of MSUM's Weld Hall

BCI Construction, Inc., a design-build general contracting and construction management company located in Sauk Rapids, Minn., has received the contract for the renovation of Minnesota State University Moorhead's Weld Hall. Construction on the $23 million project will begin Oct. 7.

BCI Construction, Inc., submitted the winning bid in a field of five competitive bidders.

Plans to renovate Weld Hall began in 2018 when MSUM received $628,000 to begin design for the renovation. During the 2020 bonding session, the historic building was a top priority for the Minnesota State system and received support from Governor Walz. It was not included in the final bonding bill.

Fast-forward to the 2023 legislative bonding session, which included $23 million for Weld Hall - the oldest and most iconic building on MSUM's campus. Weld was last renovated more than 50 years ago. While it still retains its considerable character and charm, it is long overdue for a facelift.

"We are thrilled to begin the exciting renovation of Weld Hall," said Brenda Norris, MSUM's Executive Director of Facilities Management. "This marks a significant and eagerly anticipated milestone in advancing our comprehensive facilities plan. If all goes as planned, we expect to have the building ready for classes in the spring of 2026."

After the remodel, Weld will house innovative, flexible classrooms with a significant renovation of Glasrud Auditorium, including restoration of the grand balcony. The building will be restored to its original beauty while modernizing and equipping it for 21st-century learning. The design calls for more collaborative learning spaces and state-of-the-art technology. It will also make the building more welcoming to the community by adding a north entrance that is accessible from 6th Avenue South, where there is ample parking. The community could also use the interior spaces for town hall meetings, community events, conferences, and performing arts events.

"The Weld Hall renovation will certainly enhance the educational experience for our students, but it will also contribute to the vitality of our local and regional community," said MSUM President Tim Downs.
