MSGID/GENADMIN/CMC WASHINGTON DC//
SUBJ/VETERANS DAY//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. On behalf of all Marines, I express my sincerest
gratitude to all Americans who have worn a uniform in service to
this Nation in its Armed Forces. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson
established 11 November as Armistice Day to reflect on the end of
World War I and the heroism of those Americans who died.
The holiday was redesignated as Veteran's Day in 1954, expanding on
its appreciation to all, draftee or volunteer, active-duty or
reservist, living or dead. We continue that tradition to this day,
recognizing and honoring those who have served this great Nation.
2. To all Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and
Guardians who have served in peace or wartime, thank you. Your
selflessness and sacrifice stands as a testament to the courage,
strength, and resolve of the United States Armed Forces.
3. On 11 November, I call upon all Marines to recognize the proud
heritage we have inherited and pay our respects to all veterans for
their service. Let their example inspire us as we continue the
tradition of answering our Nation's call.
4. Semper Fidelis, Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
