STATEMENT: Michigan Dems Chair Applauds Landmark Education Bill Signing

With record-high investments in Michigan schools, this historic education budget is working to build a brighter future for all students

LANSING - Today, Governor Whitmer signed the $23 billion education budget for FY2025, cementing life-changing new programs into law. For the sixth consecutive year, the legislature has hit an all-time high per-pupil investment to support our classrooms, teachers, and students. This budget puts more educators in classrooms, supports students' mental and physical health to focus on learning, and lowers barriers so more Michiganders can get the skills they need to support their families with good-paying jobs - all while saving them thousands of dollars a year.

"Michigan Democrats believe that every Michigander deserves a fair shot, and this education budget is another step toward a brighter future for everyone in our great state," said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. "This budget increases funding for every aspect of public education - classroom resources, teacher pay, mental health resources, transportation, and much more. There is no more important asset in our entire state than our students, and the budget puts billions of dollars into ensuring they have access to the quality education they deserve.

"Yet, even with all the good it does, the MAGA MIGOP still couldn't get over their extremist agenda to support Michigan children. Too many MAGA Republicans voted against this budget, despite the millions of dollars it would put into their districts, and their constituents deserve better than representatives who time and time again refuse to do the work to deliver for Michiganders."

Here are just some of the MAGA MIGOP Representatives who voted against this historic budget:

  • Rep. Donni Steele (HD-54)
  • Rep. Matt Hall (HD-42)
  • Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (HD-46)
  • Rep. Jamie Thompson (HD-28)
  • Rep. James DeSana (HD-29)
  • Rep. Mark Tisdel (HD-55)
  • Rep. Thomas Kuhn (HD-57)
  • Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (HD-62)
  • Rep. David Martin (HD-68)
  • Rep. Nancy De Boer (HD-86)
  • Rep. Timothy Beson (HD-96)
