HRC57 - Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

57th session

Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous persons with disabilities

26 September

EU statement

Mr. President,

We thank the Special Rapporteur for his report.

The report describes the ways in which Indigenous Persons with disabilities live at the intersection of multiple forms of discrimination. Beyond individual impairments, they navigate the compounded impacts of poverty, environmental injustice, and social exclusion. Indigenous women with disabilities face unique challenges due to the intersectionality of discrimination based on gender, race and disability. Only through a commitment to intersectional approaches and Indigenous-led solutions can we promote full inclusion, dignity, and respect for their rights, as set out in the UNDRIP and international human rights law.

The European Union strives for targeted action on disability as well as disability mainstreaming in our external action. The EU's Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy lays out the EU's ambitions to step up action to combat all forms of discrimination facing persons with disabilities, regardless of their origin and with a specific attention to multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, in accordance with its human rights guidelines on non-discrimination in external action.

Special Rapporteur,

Could you please share examples of how Indigenous knowledge and practices can be integrated into mainstream systems and policies to promote the rights of Indigenous persons with disabilities?

Thank you.
