On Saturday, November 2, Brazil made a new donation of medicines and food to Lebanon, including food baskets collected by the United for Lebanon Association (UpL, in Portuguese acronym), totaling a shipment of 27.3 tons.
The operation is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Defense, the Embassy of Lebanon in Brasília, the Consulate General of Lebanon in São Paulo and UpL.
The Federal Government's operation 'Raízes do Cedro' has enabled the donation to Lebanon of eight shipments of medicines, medical and hospital supplies, and rehydration envelopes sourced from the public inventory of the Brazilian unified health system (SUS), managed by the Ministry of Health. Donations also included medicines and food baskets collected by Lebanese diplomatic and consular missions in Brazil and donated by Brazilian companies.
Donations made by the Ministry of Health respond to a request made by the Lebanese Embassy in Brasília last September. Brazil's international humanitarian cooperation uses public supplies of the unified health system (SUS), managed by the Ministry of Health. In this context, donations are made following technical assessment that ensure there is no risk of compromising the national supply within the SUS.
