Dear Marquette family and friends,
The shorter days and colder temperatures meant it was time for a beloved Marquette tradition - the annual lighting of our Christmas tree in the Gratitude Garden outside St. Joan of Arc Chapel. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and families gathered to sing carols and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies before the switch was flipped to illuminate Central Mall. I hope you enjoy highlights from the evening in the video above.
The Christmas tree's radiant lights remind us that Jesus Christ, whose birth we await with eager anticipation, is the light of the world. We can follow in the path of Jesus by being a light to those we hold dear.
The beloved Christmas carol Do You Hear What I Hear? concludes with the line, "He will bring us goodness and light." As we know, those lyrics refer to the newborn Christ child, whose birth is a sign of God's immense love for us. Like Jesus, may we bring goodness and light to everyone we encounter. And may we carry the joy that we are sure to feel on Christmas Day with us throughout the year.
I deeply appreciate your prayers and well wishes as I begin my service as Marquette University's 25th president. It is an honor to lead this great institution and to carry on the legacy of my friend and mentor, Dr. Michael Lovell, who brought goodness and light to so many.
On behalf of my family and the entire Marquette University community, I wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season!
Dr. Kimo Ah Yun
