The Newton Public Library held its annual Fall Book Swap on November 4th, attracting a record 117 participants. The event saw community members bring in gently used books, DVDs, and puzzles to donate, and in exchange, select new items to take home. This popular event, which fosters a love of reading and recycling, will return in the spring, with the next swap scheduled for April 2025.
In other library news, the winners of the library's Pumpkin Contest have been announced, with Olivia Welch taking the top prize in the 8-12 age group for her pumpkin inspired by The Boxcar Children: The Mystery of the Hot Air Balloon, Book #47.
November also brought the announcement of the library's latest staff book picks. Those looking for reading inspiration can check out the monthly list online and click on any cover to find the item in the library catalog. Patrons can also call 641-792-4108 to place a hold.
The library is also celebrating a major milestone in its 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Emma Harden, age 2 ½, recently completed the program, listening to her 1,000th book. Emma's favorite book from the 1,000 was Hokey Pokey Elmo. She received a bag full of items to help her prepare for kindergarten, along with a special book to keep. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is designed to encourage early literacy through daily reading, a key factor in future academic success.
Finally, the library's Chess Club for Kids will meet on Monday, November 25th, from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Teen area. Beginners are welcome to join staff member Bill Bennett, who will introduce new players to the game.
The Newton Public Library continues to offer exciting opportunities and resources for the community, and looks forward to more events and programs in the coming months.
