As the daughter of a professional beekeeper, it's no surprise that Environmental Science major Layla Hoffen '26 is fascinated with bees. Through a collaboration with Southwestern alumnus and Board of Visitors member Konrad Bouffard '93 and his business, Round Rock Honey, Hoffen created one of SU's most unique student organizations on campus: BEE-Co. Short for Beekeeping Education and Engagement Community, BEE-Co provides Southwestern students with the opportunity to learn about beekeeping, expand the pollinator habitat around Southwestern, and foster a relationship with the environment. Thanks to their efforts, Southwestern University was recently named a "Bee Campus USA" by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. BEE-Co would like to thank the Snead Institute and Chisholm Trail Communities Foundation for providing grant funding that made these projects possible.
