CARBONDALE, Ill. - Reports of online hacking are frequent these days, so it seems only fitting that the Illinois APEX Accelerator at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is marking October as Cybersecurity Month by hosting the workshop Cybersecurity Is National Security.

The no-cost event is set for 2-4 p.m. Oct. 17 in Rooms 150/151 at Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, 1740 Innovation Drive. The inaugural eTech (Emerging Technologies) Talks Series workshop will launch the Office of Innovation and Economic Development's new Experts in Residence program, and it will offer invaluable information for entrepreneurs, innovators, tech professionals and businesses interested in securing their data, diving into emerging technologies or exploring U.S. Department of Defense contracts.

Expert will share insights

Terance Henry, a regional cybersecurity expert, small-business owner and internationally known geographic information system (GIS) developer, will be the guest speaker for the in-person session.

Organizers say Henry's critical insights and actionable strategies will help participants:

  • Protect their businesses' data from cyber threats and improve cyber resilience.
  • Learn to implement best practices to secure businesses in today's digital landscape.
  • Access key state government resources for enhancing cybersecurity.

Brenda Henderson, director of the Illinois APEX Accelerator at SIU, will also speak, highlighting how business cyber hygiene and security intersects with national security and provide federal resources to assist businesses in meeting the new requirements to secure contracts with DOD and improve competitiveness in securing government contracts.

"This eTech Talk will help businesses and entrepreneurs be better informed so they can be at the forefront of innovation and cybersecurity," Henderson said.
