Kaine Statement on Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act Being Blocked in Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked a procedural measure to advance the Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Acton the Senate floor:

"I'm disappointed that my Republican colleagues voted to block legislation-which was passed with an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in the House-to enhance the Child Tax Credit and give 16 million Americans with children extra breathing room. The bill would have also increased the supply of affordable housing, cut red tape for small businesses, and expanded innovation and U.S. economic competitiveness by supporting research and development. American families and businesses deserve better. I'll keep pushing to pass legislation to cut taxes for working families, lower costs, and support small businesses."

The Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act included several provisions Kaine has long supported, such as an expansion to the Child Tax Credit. This expansion would help 16 million children, including 300,000 children in Virginia, and lift 500,000 out of poverty. It would have also helped small businesses invest in research and development and expand the supply of affordable housing through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), provisions from bills that Senator Kaine has long pushed. The House of Representatives passed the bill on January 31, 2024.
