Washburn Tech Receives Big Gift

Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University has announced a $3 million gift from longtime supporters Bruce and Theresa McPherson to benefit Washburn Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech). This marks the largest individual donation to Washburn Tech since it affiliated with the university in 2008 and follows Washburn Tech's announcement last week of opening a Manufacturing Institute in North Topeka.

"The impact of this gift is immeasurable and will make a tremendous difference in the lives of students, our instructors and staff, as well as the broader business and industry community in our region and state," said Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, president, Washburn. "Through their support, the McPhersons continue to show their deep commitment to education and workforce development, and we are incredibly grateful for their vision and generosity. It is an historic moment for Washburn Tech and a testament to investing in the future of technical education."

Washburn Tech's vast array of programs from health occupations to construction and manufacturing to hospitality and human services will all be bolstered by this record-setting gift from the McPhersons.

Bruce McPherson, who also recently supported baseball complex improvements at Washburn University, said, "When we saw the plans the university had for the future of Washburn Tech, we were eager to be a part of it. Construction trades are vital to our regional economy and development, and Washburn Tech has demonstrated their commitment to making their programs accessible to all areas of the community. This is undeniably a great program worthy of support, and we hope to make Washburn Tech the premier technical institute in the state of Kansas."

Marshall Meek, president, Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the McPhersons for the many ways they show their support for Washburn initiatives and programs.

"Bruce and Theresa McPherson have made their mark in the Washburn community through their support of a number of initiatives ranging from scholarships to athletic facilities as well as being incredible drivers of legacy giving," said Meek. "This gift will take Washburn Tech's facilities and future to the next level and will play a substantial role in strengthening the local economy and workforce for generations to come."
